Asia is the new continent for potatoes
Today, the potato is grown in 130 countries, on all continents of the world. Asia und Oceania have now overtaken Europe as the world’s most important producers. In 2007, 320 million tonnes of potatoes were harvested from around 19.2 million ha of land around the world. The areas of greatest production are Asia and continental Europe. Within the latter region, cultivation is concentrated in the Russian Federation, the European Union, and the Ukraine.
The fungal pathogen Phytophthora infestans is increasing its hold on potato crops in Europe. In recent years, a wide range of new pathotypes has emerged through generative (sexual) reproduction, allowing the disease to become more aggressive and more damaging.

Along with leaf diseases, pests represent a serious risk for potato growers around the world: they can decrease tuber quality significantly, and at worst, they can destroy entire harvests. The danger can be managed through preventative measures, and with the aid of effective Bayer products such as Biscaya® and Proteus®.

The potato is the world’s fourth most important food plant - after rice, wheat and maize. But that’s not all: the tuber’s starch content also makes the modest spud an extremely versatile and sustainable raw material.
